John -

There are many people in our county who, unfortunately, see crime in their neighborhoods every day. Among those people are many dedicated community members who have formed or joined groups and organizations aimed at violence prevention, restorative justice, generational healing and de-escalation.

We should all be proud of their willingness to walk community blocks each day, providing resources to trauma victims and families in need. I know I am. As County Attorney, I look forward to working in partnership and building on their progress.

I am disappointed to see my opponent, Mary Moriarty, reduce those same community groups to “people in t-shirts” in an email put out by her campaign last night.

This is the first acknowledgement of community violence and guns that my opponent has made while in this race -- and she used it to dismiss the leadership of community members who are out there making a difference.

I’ve spoken with and listened to church leaders, parents, law enforcement personnel, community activists and boots on the ground leaders. I’ve heard many of the issues facing Hennepin County – and especially Minneapolis – first-hand. Their voices matter. And when you reduce their hard work and progress to a piece of clothing, you’re dismissing the goodwill of our community members and you’re dismissing the trauma they work to prevent every day.

I’m ready to walk side-by-side with the "people in t-shirts" and anyone else committed to progress as we build a public safety system that serves all residents in our county. We are safer together.

We cannot address crime and create public safety without the work our community violence prevention groups are doing daily.

The message Mary Moriarty sent to community members can't be unsent. I hope you'll join me today in rejecting this reckless campaign.

In solidarity,

Ryan
