Today, you may have heard that the NDRC has announced our initial 2022 Democracy Targets ahead of this fall’s elections. I’m following up to explain why investing in these targets is so important to our work ahead.

When we launched the NDRC in 2017, we knew that securing fair maps would be a multi-year fight and that it wouldn’t take one redistricting cycle alone. But we didn’t know how far the GOP would go to cling to their manipulated maps and undermine our democracy more broadly.
So the NDRC has had to expand both our timeline and our scope of work. Redistricting no longer ends once the last state has adopted its maps; Republicans have admitted that they see it as a battle that continues year after year. And to defend democracy from right-wing attacks on fair maps, the freedom to vote, elections and election workers, and even the truth (including the truth about who won the 2020 presidential election), we now have to fight on more fronts than we ever imagined back in 2017.
That’s why I’m grateful to you, John, for being there when we’ve asked and donating when you can.

The 2022 elections will be critical to keeping our fight going and protecting our hard-earned victories. The NDRC is planning to target races in at least 17 states where we can help protect fair elections, hold Republicans accountable for their cheating, and support democracy-upholding Democrats. Our goal is to invest in gubernatorial races, state legislative races, state supreme court races, and other important statewide and relevant local races all over the country.
But here’s the deal: How much we’ll be able to do in the fight for fair maps depends on the support of this community.
That’s why I’m asking for your help today. We’ve achieved so much together, but the threat to our system of government, and our fundamental values, is more real than ever. We simply can’t give up, and we can’t stop fighting. Not now, not ever.
