Representative Adriano Espaillat Recognizes 10th Anniversary of DACA

WASHINGTON, DC – Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) released the following statement in recognition of the 10th anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) :

"Yesterday marked ten years since President Barack Obama announced the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Program, offering 'Dreamers' an opportunity to seek higher education, work authorization permits, and most importantly, protection from deportation. DACA has been transformative to the lives of hundreds of thousands of young people brought to the U.S. at a young age and has resulted in economic gains for cities, states, and our nation as a whole -- however, the program falls short of a pathway to citizenship," said Espaillat.

"We celebrate the victory of undocumented youth that tirelessly organized across the country, bravely shared their stories forcing the nation to reckon with the injustices towards immigrant communities and demanded a stop to the deportations of families and students that separated communities.

"While DACA was a significant achievement for many immigrants, it is by no means a substitute for fixing our broken immigration system. I vow to continue my fight for comprehensive immigration reform and policies that keep families together," he concluded.

Representative Espaillat is the first Dominican American to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives and his congressional district includes Harlem, East Harlem, West Harlem, Hamilton Heights, Washington Heights, Inwood, Marble Hill and the north-west Bronx. First elected to Congress in 2016, Representative Espaillat is serving his third term in Congress. Congresista Adriano Espaillat reconoce el 10º aniversario de DACA

WASHINGTON, DC – El congresista Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) emitió la siguiente declaración en reconocimiento del 10º aniversario del programa de Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA):

"Ayer, 15 de junio de 2022, se cumplen diez años desde que el presidente Barack Obama anunció el Programa de Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA), que ofrece a los 'Dreamers' (Soñadores) la oportunidad de buscar educación superior, permisos de autorización para trabajar y, lo que es más importante, protección contra la deportación. DACA ha sido transformador para las vidas de cientos de miles de jóvenes traídos a los EE.UU. a una edad temprana y ha resultado en ganancias económicas para ciudades, estados y nuestra nación en general; sin embargo, el programa no ofrece una vía hacia la ciudadanía", dijo Espaillat.

"Celebramos la victoria de los jóvenes indocumentados que se organizaron incansablemente en todo el país, compartieron valientemente sus historias obligando a la nación a reconocer las injusticias que se comenten contra las comunidades inmigrantes y exigieron el fin de las deportaciones de familias y estudiantes que separan a las comunidades.

“Aunque DACA fue un logro significativo para muchos inmigrantes, de ninguna manera reemplaza la reparación de nuestro sistema de inmigración roto. Prometo continuar mi lucha por una reforma migratoria integral y políticas que mantengan unidas a las familias”, concluyó Espaillat.
