Dear John,
For years, the commercial fishing industry has been wreaking havoc on our oceans.
It has been able to keep its secrets—but not anymore, John.
Weʹve released three investigations showing the world the cruelty in our seas. These investigations expose an industry that leaves its victims to slowly suffocate, brutally saws off the fins of live fish, and drowns animals entangled in its nets.
The investigations played an important role in securing a ban on driftnets in California, the last U.S. state to allow the use of large-mesh driftnets. These nets descend as far as 100 feet and can be up to 1.7 miles long, forming a ʺcurtain of deathʺ for marine animals.
