Dear Friend,
Yesterday marked the 10th anniversary of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).
By creating temporary protection from deportation and the opportunity to go to college, apply for driver’s licenses, and find better paying work, DACA offers undocumented youth a way to reimagine their future in this country.
Ten years later, DACA remains a significant victory for the undocumented youth, advocates, and immigrant communities who fought for the right to reimagine a world that offers safety and opportunity for all. But it was never a permanent solution for the 800,000 people enrolled in the program. In recent years youth and adults have faced setbacks by the Trump Administration, in court, and from Congress.
And so, there is more to be done. Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Maria Hinojosa recently sat down with Young Center Executive Director Gladis Molina Alt to discuss the impact of DACA, and said “Dreamers are having children and…we have to think about keeping them reunited with their American born citizen, kids. I'm about having a much broader holistic conversation about really, truly comprehensive immigration reform."
