Misak leader Pedro Josse Velasco Tumina holding a sign at a protest outside Smurfit Kappa's annual shareholder meeting in Dublin

John,

Last month, Colombian Indigenous leader Pedro Josse Velasco Tumiña traveled to Ireland to challenge the paper giant decimating his ancestral lands. Now he’s in grave danger.

Over 78 human rights defenders have been killed in Pedro’s region of Colombia in just two years – many murdered by paramilitary troops allegedly working for land-grabbing corporations. To speak out is to put your life at risk

Pedro is about to launch a huge advocacy push, to demand action to protect the Misak people’s rainforest home. But now that his name and face are known he urgently needs protection.

Can you chip in the cost of a coffee so that we can provide Pedro with security and keep him safe as he fights for the rainforest? Anything extra we raise will help fund campaigns to keep indigenous activists safe everywhere.

The threat to the Misak people is very real. Last August a member of the community, Huber Samir Camayo, was shot dead by police at a protest over land rights. He was 23 years old.

Despite the dangers, there is no choice but to fight – the community’s home of a thousand years is under sustained attack from multinational Smurfit Kappa, whose non-native paper plantations have dried up the local water supply.

SumOfUs has stepped up before to help the Misak people’s fight, paying for equipment, food and shelter for a protest camp that stopped 70% of Smurfit Kappa’s activity. with your support, we can do it again – providing what they need to keep this courageous leader safe as he advocates for their future, and the rainforest.

Can you help stand up for the Misak people – and support indigenous rights globally?

Thanks for all that you do,
