June is National Pride Month, an opportunity to celebrate and uplift our LGBTQ+ friends, family, and community members! While San Diegans hold our own Pride in July, I’ll never pass up an opportunity to celebrate our community’s vibrant and diverse LGBTQ+ community. This month marks a celebration of community, love, and recognition of the LGBTQ+ trailblazers that came before us. Although this month we celebrate how far we’ve come, we are also reminded of the work that remains to be done.
As we recognize the progress we’ve made, we must also recommit ourselves to the work that remains to be done. Across the country, we are seeing a rise in discrimination and violence against the LGBTQ+ community, and state legislatures are advancing bills targeting transgender people. I promise you that I will never stop upholding and defending the rights of the LGBTQ+ community here in San Diego and across the country.
I am proud to be an original co-sponsor of the Equality Act. This landmark piece of legislation passed the House with bipartisan support over a year ago, but it has yet to pass the Senate. Join me in sending a message that the LGBTQ+ community deserves equal rights and dignity under federal law, and the time to act is now.
