Dear John,
The Jewish community in British Columbia – and, by extension, across Canada – received good news this week. In a letter dated today, Premier Horgan has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to take the next important step in fighting antisemitism in British Columbia.
The BC government has acknowledged that racism looks different for different communities and that it can change over time. In his letter, Premier Horgan also acknowledged that, to effectively combat antisemitism, we must first clearly identify it. The BC government views the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism as an important, non-legally binding educational tool to help determine what is – and what is not – antisemitic. Their goal? To build a society that is safer, healthier, and better for all British Columbians.
Part of this step has been for the BC Government to commit its full support for the Federal Government’s adoption of the IHRA definition in its national Anti-Racism Strategy. And this is why we at CIJA have come together locally and nationally: to tell you about this latest development in BC and to ask all Jewish Canadians to join in thanking the BC government for their efforts.

La communauté juive de la Colombie-Britannique – et, par extension, de tout le Canada – a reçu de bonnes nouvelles cette semaine. Dans une lettre datée d’aujourd’hui, le premier ministre John Horgan a réitéré l’engagement de son gouvernement à aller encore plus loin dans la lutte contre l’antisémitisme dans la province.
Le gouvernement de la Colombie-Britannique reconnaît que le racisme est perçu différemment d’une communauté à l’autre et que sa forme peut changer au fil du temps. Dans sa lettre, M. Horgan a aussi dit être conscient que pour combattre efficacement l’antisémitisme, nous devons d’abord discerner celui-ci clairement. Pour le gouvernement de Colombie Britannique, la définition de l’antisémitisme de l’Alliance internationale pour la mémoire de l’Holocauste (AIMH) constitue un outil éducatif important et non juridiquement contraignant pour aider à déterminer ce qu’est – et n’est pas – l’antisémitisme. Son objectif? Bâtir une société plus sûre, plus saine et où il fait mieux vivre pour l’ensemble des gens de la province.
Pour y arriver, le gouvernement s’est notamment engagé à appuyer sans réserve l’adoption par le fédéral de la définition del’AIMH dans le cadre de la Stratégie canadienne de lutte contre le racisme. Le CIJA conjugueégalement ses efforts au niveau local et national pour vous informer de ce dernierdéveloppement en Colombie-Britannique et pour demander à tous les Canadiens juifs de remercier le gouvernement provincial pour ses efforts.
