Double your donation for the next 7 days in the Big Give Christmas Challenge.
Dear John,
The 2019 Big Give Christmas Challenge is now open!
From now until next Tuesday (10th Dec) all donations made via the Big Give website will be doubled.
For over 10 years, we’ve worked with partner Association for Women's Sanctuary and Development (AWSAD) to create safe spaces for women, and their children, to heal after experiencing violence. For this year’s Christmas Challenge, we’re aiming to raise £40,000 to provide vital support for women embarking on new lives free from violence after leaving an AWSAD safe house.
Semira was still a teenager when she was raped by a friend of her family. A police officer recommended she stay at an AWSAD safe house while the case was being investigated.
“I didn’t want my family to find out because it would hurt them and I wanted to just end everything. I wanted to kill myself.”
By having a safe space to heal and receive counselling, Semira began to recover.
“The counselling service was very helpful …it made me realise that I can be independent and start a life outside the safe house.”
But what next for these women?
By joining an ex-residents group, women starting new lives will be safe in the knowledge that their support will not end once they walk out the doors of the safe house.
In addition, our partner AWSAD advises them on finding subsidised housing, on getting an ID card so they can work and receive healthcare, and on earning a living so they can live independently.
We cannot do this without you. Thank you for standing alongside these women.
Best wishes,
