[1]Alex Padilla for Senate

Today marks the 10-year anniversary of DACA — the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

Before I talk about where we go from here, I want to acknowledge that DACA was created in the first place because of the voices, the activism, and the relentless organizing of immigrants.

And for these past 10 years, along with the benefits and protections that DACA has provided for Dreamers, there has also been deep uncertainty.

As a Senator from California (home to more immigrants and specifically more Dreamers than any other state), and as the son of two immigrants from Mexico myself, I understand the urgency of the fight to reform our broken immigration system.

Because the truth is, immigrants deserve better. Dreamers deserve better. America is better than this, and that’s why we are not giving up.

Dreamers are our teachers, our doctors, our nurses, our frontline workers in so many sectors that have been so critical during this pandemic. They deserve better than to live in uncertainty or fear of changing immigration status or deportation.

That is why we’re going to keep up the fight for permanent protections and a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers, and then build on that success to fix our broken immigration system.

We’re going to explore any path forward. If Republicans are not going to come along, we must do everything in our power — including eliminating the filibuster — to get it done.

And in the meantime, we’ll keep pressing President Biden to use his executive authority to build on DACA and protect more Dreamers.

Thank you,

- Alex Padilla
