John – I’m Joe Cunningham and, as of last night, it’s official: I’m the Democratic nominee for Governor of South Carolina.

Our Governor and my opponent, Henry McMaster, has been in politics longer than I’ve been alive.

Literally.

And where has it gotten us? South Carolina is near the bottom when it comes to schools and teacher pay, we’re dead last on roads, and crime is the highest it’s ever been. If Governor McMaster was a football coach in the Southeastern Conference, he’d have been fired long ago.

And that’s not all. Like so many other GOP governors, McMaster is an extremist who puts party politics over common sense solutions that the people of South Carolina want. But with the backing of megadonors and far-right special interest groups, it’s going to take a massive grassroots movement to beat him in November.

Democratic governors serve as a brick wall against the far-right’s extreme agenda. In November, my race is one of 36 governorships on the table – and we have to play to win in every single one.
