Forestry Friday Webinar: Beech Leaf Disease
Beech leaf disease (BLD) was found for the first time in Maine in late May 2021. So far, symptoms of the disease have been observed in Hancock, Knox, Lincoln, Penobscot, and Waldo Counties, with the heaviest concentration in the Midcoast.
One year past detection, severe leaf symptoms, a high degree of aborted buds, and leafless understory trees were common in the disease's epicenter. Some mature trees that had a full complement of leaves in 2021 were almost entirely leafless. This rapid decline may lead to mortality in the short term compared to the longer-term decline seen in states further west where BLD was first described.
