RESOURCES From our President and CEO

Dear John,

How do we keep pushing the envelope? In my role at Prosperity Now, I’m regularly grappling with how we go beyond the status quo [[link removed]] so that all families can reach economic stability, build generational wealth and prosper. With Father’s Day, Juneteenth and Gun Violence Awareness Month all upon us, more questions come to mind.

As a father and grandfather, I often reflect on the following: how do I shift the narrative on Black fatherhood [[link removed]] to one of greater positivity and joy?

As a Black man leading an organization dedicated to racial and ethnic economic equity, what does freedom mean in the context of unjust and unfree systems [[link removed]]?

As an advocate that sits at several intersections within the realm of racial and economic justice, where is the best place to start when tackling the intertwined cycles of poverty and violence, and in particular, gun violence [[link removed]]?

While I work through these questions in partnership with all of you, I’m ever grateful to lead and serve at an organization that seeks to go beyond the status quo to transform and dismantle all harmful structures and systems that exclude people of color – to rebuild our economy from the ground up.

In this month’s edition, we share a wide range of opportunities to join us in working through these questions and share learnings on the solutions that can start to get us closer to an economy that works for everyone. I hope that you will join our bold calling to march on for economic justice.

Working for justice until all of us are free,

Gary L. Cunningham

Building Back for Justice: Essential Elements for a Child Tax Credit Rooted in Justice [[link removed]]

For the Child Tax Credit to be a force for racial economic justice, we must eliminate provisions, such as work requirements and means-testing, that directly contradict the true intentions of the Child Tax Credit—to set up children and families for long-term success so that future generations will be better positioned to attain financial security. To build racial economic justice, we need provisions such as full refundability, advanced monthly payments, and an increased credit amount that support BIPOC communities, not hurt them. Join Prosperity Now by calling on Congress to help us #BuildBackForJustice by expanding the Child Tax Credit.
