June is Pride Month, devoted to celebrating and supporting the LGBTQ community. It’s important to acknowledge that while suicide is a leading cause of death among the LGBTQ community, we know that LGBTQ people are not prone to suicide simply because of their identity. Increased experiences of victimization, discriminatory policies, systemic bias and historic inequity contribute to higher risk for anxiety, depression and attempting suicide.

In addition to supporting research, legislation and education resources like AFSP’s [Talk Saves Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention in the LGBTQ Community]([link removed]), storytelling is a powerful tool that can help remind us we are never alone and our experiences are valid. Join us this month – and beyond – in celebrating the voices of the LGBTQ community.

“Respect and love are something I talk about a lot. As a proud transgender woman, I have learned just how important these two words are, particularly when they become not just words, but actions.”
