John,

For decades, the lead industry lied to Americans about lead poisoning and its devastating impact. And, for decades, the industry got away with it.

But no longer.

Elected officials, scientists, and public advocates are exposing the big con of the lead industry — and the racially charged tactics it used to deflect attention from its toxic problem.

For years, the industry portrayed lead poisoning as a problem for low-income and minority communities to protect sales. Implicit in the industry messaging was a deep racial bias and a minimization of mounting evidence indicating lead was poisoning children with shocking effects.

According to social scientists and environmental historians, the toxic effect of lead on children was identified more than a hundred years ago. The industry moved quickly to create the public perception of lead poisoning as an issue for inner cities, where housing was deteriorating and primarily children of color were exposed to lead flaking off walls and ceilings.

Shockingly, it’s estimated that 500,000 children have elevated levels of lead in their blood today. That, in turn, affects their IQs and neurological development while increasing attention deficit disorders, impacting an entirely new generation. By manipulating public perception, the lead industry continued to profit and ensured the substance remained a part of everyday products like paint and gasoline.

John, SEEC members of Congress are working to ensure funding is available to state and local agencies to remove lead from areas where children can access it. That includes eliminating lead from the paint in homes and the pipes carrying water into children’s homes. One example of this sort of legislation is SEEC Co-Chair Paul Tonko’s Lead Poisoning Prevention Act, which would fund federal grants and programs to screen, report, and prevent lead poisoning in children.

SEEC members are holding the lead industry accountable just as they are doing with other polluting industries. There’s no more playing ignorant or spreading lies to cover up the truth.
