For the past few weeks, I have updated you on gun reform legislation in the House as well as necessary investments in our communities that, together, can reduce gun violence. I would like to take this opportunity and inform you as to where it stands now.
Since May 25th, Democrats in the House, myself included, have signed discharge resolutions and supported motions to suspend House rules so that key gun reform bills HB 699, HB 717, HB 770, HB 1538, HB 1903 can be moved out of the Judiciary committee and brought to the floor of the House for consideration.
Last Wednesday during session, Democrats announced they would be presenting a resolution the following day to again move gun reform bills out of the Judiciary committee and to the floor for consideration. Republicans preemptively canceled session on Thursday and scheduled a Judiciary committee meeting early Monday morning so that they could relocate the bills into a different committee thus making the resolution invalid.
Truly political gamesmanship at its worst, Republicans in the House refuse to take any steps to address gun violence, even refusing to fund and address mental health care in our state. Dragging our feet and waiting for the federal senators to come to an agreement before the end of July before they break is not only poor government practice but completely irresponsible.
My colleague Rep. Tim Briggs said it best: "When every day there's shootings, victims of gun violence, mass shootings, kids are at risk, shoppers are at risk, we're going to wait to send it to the House Local Government Committee because the U.S. Senate has a framework? ... Blood is on your hands."
