The impact of dis- and misinformation (DisMis) have never been clearer than in the past two years of the COVID-19 pandemic. As we witnessed the erosion of public trust in science and government, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders across the country have been dealing with a rise in hate crimes propagated by falsehoods.

Xenophobic remarks made by high-ranking elected officials played no small part in sparking a surge in racist hashtags and conspiracy theories that only furthered discrimination and hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. According to a recent report, anti-Asian hate crimes rose by 339% during the pandemic and a recent poll revealed that 21% of US adults believe in the dangerous falsehood that Asian Americans are responsible for COVID-19.
