Meteorologist and Democratic candidate for Congress (IL-17) Eric Sorensen here. These days it seems like we are often living in a different world from some of our neighbors. Folks’ reactions to the events on January 6th show that. 

For 20 years, I was trusted to bring severe weather information to the people of Northwest Illinois. And if you’ve never lived here, I need to explain: tornadoes, floods, derechos, icy roads – these are all regular factors in our neck of the woods (and exceedingly becoming more common with climate change). My job was more than just the daily temperature and likelihood of rain. And I took it seriously, very seriously, as lives were at stake. 

So how does my background connect into what we’ve seen in the Jan. 6th committee hearings? I’m horrified with the insurrection and attempted coup on our country’s democracy. And I wish everyone in my community felt the same way… but they don’t. 

I can’t promise that I’m going to be able to talk through the partisan noise, but I can tell you that I have been doing it here for the past two decades. Throughout this campaign, I’ve spoken with countless Republicans who say they’re pulling a Democratic ballot for the first time in their lives to vote for me. Why? Because they trust me. 

Here in Northwest Illinois voters are going to support the candidate who’s guided by science, who’s willing to speak to every voter across the district, and who’s been a trusted voice on TV in the district for the past 20 years. 

Will I be able to talk about January 6th to people that don’t see the insurrection as a problem (or who don’t even believe it was an insurrection)? I can’t promise you I’ll be successful, but I am going to try. And we know that any partisan-motivated elected official doesn’t have a chance in doing that.
