As Michiganders, we know that our weather can be unpredictable. As temperatures soar to over 100 degrees in many parts of the state, it is so important that we take the time to prepare ourselves, our families, and our homes for whatever weather the rest of this week of record-breaking heat brings. This preparation can mean taking extra care to protect ourselves from severe heat.?

Governor Whitmer is committed to keeping Michiganders safe, be it from the long months of winter or high temperatures during the summer. So here are several resources and cooling shelter locations that can help you stay safe and cool during this week of high heat.

Detroit

The following centers are open to provide residents relief from the heat:

• Adams Butzel Complex, 10500 Lyndon (M-F, 8 AM-9 PM; Saturday 10 AM-6 PM)
• Farwell Recreation Center, 2711 E. Outer Drive (M-F, 11 AM ? 7 PM; not open Saturdays)

Residents and staff are required to wear a face mask and observe social distancing. Staff will also conduct temperature checks. High-touch areas and restrooms will be disinfected every two hours, and maximum capacity limits at each site have been lowered. PPE and bottled water will also be provided.

The Detroit Public Library also has seven branch locations to offer relief from extreme temperatures.? All branches are open 10AM ? 8PM Monday through Thursday and from 10AM ? 6PM Friday. Capacity is limited to 50% and visitors are limited to two hours to slow the spread of COVID-19:?? ????????????????

The library located on 950 Abbott Road will open its doors as a cooling center during its regular hours: Monday-Thursday 10:00 a.m.-9:00p.m., and Friday-Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
• The City Hall Community Room in Charlotte in the basement level of 111 E Lawrence, and the West Side Fire Station Community room at 911 W. Shepherd will be open to the public as cooling centers from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

They will accept all people who are experiencing homelessness needing cool shelter even those on the ?No Service? list.
• Degage Ministries (144 Division Ave S): The community center will remain open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and will operate as a cooling center if it is above 90 degrees.
• Crossroads Bible Church (800 Scribner Ave NW): Open on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon for a meal and access to the Mel Trotter shower unit. Social workers, recovery coaches and medical staff are also on-site.

Calhoun County

• SHARE Center will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. with water distribution
• Haven of Rest Ministries will be open 24 hours
• Battle Creek Shelter will be open 24 hours
• Salvation Army on Capital Avenue NE will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Albion

• The public library will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. with the children?s room from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.
• Tractor Supply will be open for pet owners and pets.
• Open swim at Opportunity High School from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday.
• Albion College?s Ludington Center will be open Tuesday and Wednesday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
• The lobby of the Albion Department of Public Safety will be open 24 hours.
• Mayor's office in City Hall 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Kalamazoo County

The city of Kalamazoo will be opening fire hydrants during the extremely hot weather. They will be open daily from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. by city staff:

Follow guidance from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) recently sent out a list of guidance on how we can all stay safe and healthy during this heat wave. Some of these tips include:

• Drink more fluids and avoid liquids with large amounts of sugar or alcohol.
• Limit outdoor activities to when it is coolest in the morning and evening.
• Spend time indoors in air conditioning.
• Wear lightweight, light-colored and loose-fitting clothing.
• Wear sunscreen, as sunburn affects a body?s ability to cool down.
• Check on elderly neighbors and relatives to determine if they need assistance.

Request assistance when necessary

MDHHS also provided some helpful information on heat exhaustion and heatstroke. If you experience any of the following symptoms, please seek medical attention:

• Heavy sweating
• Muscle cramps
• Weakness
• Dizziness
• Headache
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Fainting
• Extremely high body temperature (above 103?F)
• Tiredness

In addition to staying hydrated and out of the sun, residents are reminded to never leave children or pets alone in a car even with windows cracked. Temperatures inside a car can easily be double the temperature outside. Because a child?s body heats up three to five times faster than an adult they are more susceptible to heatstroke.

It is so important that we all take the time to prepare ourselves for these high summer Michigan temperatures and stay healthy and safe. By taking precautions, sharing these resources with our loved ones, and asking for help when we need it, we can ensure all Michiganders stay protected, no matter the weather outside.
