Dear John,
I write to you today from Honduras, where I have spent the past week interviewing melon workers who earn $1.27 an hour in seasonal jobs harvesting the fruit that makes corporate executives in the United States, Ireland, and Japan millionaires.
Workers are telling me that people are fainting due to high quotas and heat exhaustion, that they experience headaches and facial numbing from toxic chemical exposure, and are even denied medical attention and the sick leave they need despite having dengue fever.
Today, on Giving Tuesday, please join us as a monthly supporter so that we can continue to stand in solidarity with these workers who are organizing for justice in the global economy: [link removed]
The blatant injustice I have been witness to this week, all in the name of profit, is quite overwhelming. But I hold close the faces of the young children, who curiously watch their parents talk to me about how they risked losing their only job to stand up to an abusive employer so that they can feed their kids and send them to school.
One woman who has spent the past two decades working in these melon fields and has been left without access to social security, told me that she continues to fight for her union so that her daughters, who now also work on Fyffes’ plantations, may reap the benefits of her fight.
She, along with the dozens of other working parents I have met this week are planting the seeds of justice that one day will grow, so that their children can quite literally reap the fruit of their labor and their struggle.
The work we do at ILRF is all about finding ways to rein in the insidious corporate power that bulldozes the rights of working people in Honduras, and all over the world. Our campaigns have recently been making strides! Thanks to the campaign pressure you have helped us bring to bear on Fyffes, the melon workers told us the company is scrambling to make some small improvements.
But the fight is far from over. This Giving Tuesday, I hope that you are able to join us as a monthly donor so that we will have the sustainable support we need to continue in this struggle. Please support the U.S. Labor Education in the Americas Project at ILRF as we escalate our campaign to ensure the billion-dollar fruit company Fyffes improves working conditions and respects workers’ right to organize in Honduras! If your inbox is anything like mine, you’re getting many emails today from organizations doing amazing work asking for your donation today. It means a lot to us to receive a meaningful gift from you today in any amount – what’s most important is that we know that you’re with us as we prepare for 2020.
Thank you in advance for your support!
In solidarity,
