Many of our email updates over the past few months have focused on our response to the war in Ukraine and the hunger emergency in the Horn of Africa.

Immediate aid in the face of these disasters is essential — and at the same time, Mercy Corps’ humanitarian response continues after
the headlines fade. Right now, in communities around the world, our teams are working to help people recover, rebuild, and become more resilient to a
wide range of challenges.

Read on for a few brief updates from our teams working with local community members, government officials, and other changemakers around the globe.

In Haiti, Mercy Corps distributes kits to families affected by the 2021 earthquake.


Haiti
Nearly one year after a devastating 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti, Mercy Corps continues to help communities recover. Our teams on the ground
are continuing to work alongside local leaders to rehabilitate damaged water systems, promote land conservation techniques, and better prepare
communities for disasters like hurricanes.

Afghanistan
The number of people in need of humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan has nearly doubled in the last year, reaching 18.4 million people — half the
country’s population. Mercy Corps has resumed operations in Afghanistan and is working with Afghan families to help them meet urgent needs, rebuild
livelihoods, and create a more peaceful future. We are providing cash assistance and income-generating programs, agricultural support, clean water,
and sanitation supplies.

Kidosan and her twins fled the conflict in Ethiopia to Um Rakuba refugee camp where Mercy Corps is operating.


Ethiopia
It’s been over a year since the conflict in northern Ethiopia erupted, displacing an estimated 375,000 people in the Afar region alone. Our team in
Ethiopia is continuing to respond to this crisis by establishing a health clinic in Um Rakuba camp, and providing families living in displacement
camps with cash assistance and essential items like washbasins, soap, water purification tablets, and more to help them meet their urgent needs.
