State Budget Update: Negotiations to Continue Past July 15

Graphic calling on elected officials to fund affordable housing

State Budget negotiations took a surprising turn this week. While NPH, members, and partners expected the final budget framework to meet the June 15 constitutional deadline, lawmakers will need more time to reconcile final budget details. They instead decided to only pass a framework on Monday that buys them time for continued discussions.

This framework includes an increase in affordable housing investments from the Governor's latest proposal, though we'll have to wait for the final details to offer deeper analysis. Murmurs from Sacramento signal that we could get more information on the budget by the end of this weekend -- and almost certainly by July 1.

NPH State Budget Advocacy: Last week, NPH and other regional leaders released a joint statement calling on elected officials to deepen investments in housing & homelessness in the final state budget.

EVENT: State Budget Round Up: State Budget Agreement and Assessment for Future Fiscal Years, Next Thursday, June 23 (1:00PM - 2:30PM PT) NPH Policy Director Abram Diaz will moderate a discussion on state budget allocations for housing and homelessness priorities and what we can expect in the final budget agreement. We’ll also examine what this means for this fiscal year and what we can expect for future budget discussions.

Last week Senator Scott Wiener introduced SB 1336, a bill that provides a streamlined process for religious organizations and nonprofit colleges to develop affordable housing on their property regardless of local zoning restrictions.

“Faith-based organizations have long served as community anchors, living out their faith by supporting their neighbors,” said NPH Executive Director Amie Fishman. NPH, alongside the Southern California Association of NonProfit Housing (SCANPH), is proud to co-sponsor SB 1336.

Do your part in helping us pass this critical bill: submit an organizational support letter for SB 1336 today!

NEW: Resident Engagement Webpage

NPH has created a new webpage to support your resident voter engagement and advocacy efforts: Resident Engagement!

Resident Engagement means bringing front and center the people who represent the Bay Area’s roughly 200,000 affordable housing residents. It also means supporting the critical workers of affordable housing sites.

As we work towards home for all, we’re proud to partner with resident services staff to uplift the voices and experiences of affordable housing residents, the people who are directly impacted by our movement’s progress.

This web space was born out of the amazing work shepherded by our former Senior Project Manager of Campaigns & Community Engagement, Azul Cortez, who has recently left the organization for an exciting opportunity at the Kapor Center. Moving forward our resident engagement work will be overseen by Andrea Bañas, who will begin her role as Senior Program Manager, Campaigns & Community Engagement on June 20.

Present YOUR Expertise at the NPH Conference!
