Here comes the sun: enjoy? but stay safe

Sunshine image

We?re having a gorgeous run of sunny days this week ? and temperatures are set to hit 30 degrees on Friday. It?s a lovely opportunity to get outdoors and explore our city?s parks and open spaces, but we all need to take care in hot weather. ?As well as drinking plenty of fluids, the best advice to stay safe in the sun is:

* Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm
* Wear sunscreen (at least factor 30)
* Cover up with suitable clothing and sunglasses
* Take extra care with children.

The NHS website has lots of useful advice and tips on sun safety [ [link removed] ] and dehydration [ [link removed] ].

Please also be careful around our rivers and lakes. It can very tempting to take a dip during the hot weather. Saturday marks the start of Drowning Prevention Week which is a timely reminder of how we should take care around water. Over the summer the risk to the public from accidental drowning increases significantly. The temperature of our rivers and waterways stays very low and can cause shock or hypothermia. The water also hides other dangers such as sudden dips and drops, weeds and mud, and very strong currents. It?s not worth the risk.

You can find useful guidance from the Royal Lifesaving Society [ [link removed] ]. If you want to try organised open water swimming at Colwick Park, you can visit the council website: www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/colwickcp [ [link removed] ]

Do your bit for Clean Air Day this Thursday

Tomorrow is Clean Air Day, and people in Nottingham have more opportunity than most to do their bit to contribute towards better air quality. The council has been investing in one of the best public transport systems in the country for many years, as well as building and upgrading walking and cycling routes, increasing the use of electric vehicles through a network of charging points and establishing School Streets to make them safer and cleaner for children.

I would urge everyone to use Clean Air Day as an opportunity to think about what they can do - whether it?s leaving the car at home and opting to walk or cycle, making use of one of our Park & Ride sites or trying out the new Nottingham Contactless multi-operator ticketing option, clean air affects everyone and we can all take action to help improve it.

My fellow councillors will be out tomorrow talking to car drivers about the rules around not idling (switching off your engine when it?s not in use), especially around schools and childcare settings. It?s so important because air pollution, while its very bad for everyone, is especially dangerous to children.

New route through Broad Marsh site opens up new opportunities

Broad Marsh demolition

There?s more signs of progress at Broad Marsh, where coach services began operating from the new bus station yesterday [ [link removed] ]. A new pedestrian route is to be opened up across the demolished section of the former shopping centre.

The route will provide uninterrupted open air access between the Southside of the city into the city centre for the first time since the Broadmarsh centre was built in the early 1970s. The covered walkway that has been in place to maintain pedestrian access during demolition will close when the new route opens later this summer.

The walkway will be four metres wide, with lighting and CCTV and bollards at either end, fenced off from the demolition site either side with windows to see progress on the site. The new pedestrian route will eventually be fully developed to tie in with the Collin Street improvements and become part of the ?green heart? space that?s been set out in the vision for the Broad Marsh site.

It's a small but significant step towards creating a reimagined gateway to the city that will play an important role in Nottingham?s future, making it a more attractive and accessible part of the city. More here [ [link removed] ]

Nottingham joins global Race to Resilience

Race to recilience

This month, Nottingham has joined the global Race to Resilience ? a worldwide campaign that aims to help communities adapt to the impacts of climate change. The city is already feeling the effects of a warmer world, with increased flooding and unseasonably hot weather predicted for this week. Frontline communities are facing severe risks, so the council is dedicated to supporting them through the city?s ambition to be carbon neutral by 2028 (CN28).

Resilience and adaptation make up one of the four key pillars of the CN28 Action Plan and we are already making good progress in this area. For example, the council has recently completed a scheme to improve resilience to river flooding in Nottingham. Focusing on Jubilee Ponds, Valley Road Park and Jason Spencer Sports Ground, existing ponds were upgraded to store more water and the Day Brook was returned to a more natural state to slow the flow of water. This scheme has improved the habitat for wildlife, created new paths to improve public access and 160 homes are now better protected from the risk of flooding.?

Children

Though schools have yet to break up for summer, I know that many parents are thinking about the cost of buying new school uniforms for the autumn term.

Did you know that you can get help with the costs of school uniform? If you and your child live in Nottingham city and they go to a Nottingham City school in years reception, one, four, seven, nine or eleven (except free school and academies) and you receive certain benefits, you can claim up to ?40 to help with school uniform costs.

And finally

I had two lovely visits this morning, with Cllr Linda Woodings Portfolio Holder for Adults Social Care and Health, to the Marcus Garvey Day Centre and the Acorn Resource Centre. It was great to see them both fully open after Covid and Nottingham people enjoying their time there. A huge thanks to staff there who make the two services so welcoming and to the citizens too for the really helpful conversations.

We also had a good meeting with the Marcus Garvey Action Group and Committee who are keen to work with us to help make sure that our services and those of partners work as well as possible for Nottingham?s diverse communities - a big thank you to them for the contribution they have made in supporting our citizens.?
