John—
For the first time in nearly 30 years, it looks like Congress is on the verge of passing bipartisan legislation that will make our communities safer from gun violence.
The historic package announced yesterday was developed with the support of 20 Democrats and Republicans. It will:
- Establish a grant program that will strengthen state red flag and extreme risk laws.
- Create an enhanced background check review process for 18–21 year olds looking to purchase long guns.
- Make it harder for abusive dating partners to get their hands on guns.
- Crack down on people who illegally evade federal firearms dealer requirements.
While this agreement does not include many of the stronger gun safety policies we have been and will continue fighting for, we believe these new gun laws will save lives.
This is a potential leap forward for gun safety, but we’re not at the finish line yet. The final legislation still has to be drafted and voted on in the Senate.
Make no mistake: we’re here today because of our collective effort and dedication over many years. Your support is what has brought us to this pivotal moment.
So please, if you can, support Giffords Law Center again today to make sure we have the resources to keep up the fight. Together, we can ensure the passage of this bill and continue building a safer America.
Thank you,
Lindsay Nichols
