Growing 350Brooklyn
When 350Brooklyn started around a kitchen table, the small group of women gathered there didn’t know if it would go anywhere or gain any traction. They just knew that—for the sake of their community, the world and their own sanity—they needed to start taking some action to stop climate change.
Seven years later, we have accomplished so much! We have stopped pipelines and power plants, and supported the passage of major climate legislation. We have helped shape neighborhood rezoning and delivered great public programs about solutions to the climate crisis. We have our own engaging podcast, and our compelling e-magazine has just launched.
Underlying it all we have built a community. With every person who donates time—an hour a year, a month, a week, or a day—and in our alliances with the many other groups that do this work, we are creating affiliations that join people together as they take action. And with action comes hope.

Why do we need more money now? We would like to hire a part-time support person for the Media team. Our Media team is incredible: producing the bimonthly newsletter, posting on social media, keeping the website fresh and informative, producing our e-magazine. The work they do draws more people to join us, reinforces the impact of our work on targets like legislators, agency staff, and journalists, and attracts audiences to our programs, our podcasts, and other public offerings. Importantly, as our 350Brooklyn work has expanded, so have our requests for support from the Media Team. But they are at capacity. Like most 350Brooklyn members, they do this work in the time they can spare from their day jobs and their families.
Two years ago we hired our first (and, and so far, only) employee, a ten-hour-a-week Administrative Assistant. Her management of our back office work has been amazing, and has underpinned our recent accomplishments. With their own part-time associate, the Media Team will be able to expand 350Brooklyn’s media reach. We do really significant work but that work has to be out in the world to have its full impact. The work that the Media team does helps make our work as effective as it can possibly be, and showcases how people working together to address our common crisis, as 350Brooklyn does, can get things done.
