At No Labels, we’ve been in the business of building unity for more than a decade. Despite the harsh divisions, our nation has faced and persevered through far worse.

In this op-ed, appearing Tuesday in The Hill, I look back at how Republican Abraham Lincoln ran for reelection in 1864 on a "National Union" ticket with a Democratic running mate even with the nation mired in the Civil War. It was an important symbolic move to show both sides that once hostilities came to an end, Americans would need to move forward together.
