Fair Elections Program: I was proud to move the legislation through the Council creating the District's Fair Elections Program, which we now see in its second cycle. The program, which I am proud to participate in, offers a 5x match for every dollar donated by a DC resident to a campaign up to a reasonable cap and a base fund. In exchange, you agree to strict contribution caps and are not permitted to accept donations from corporations or PACs. The program has been incredibly popular and successful at bringing a more diverse set of candidates before voters while also getting big money out of local campaigns. It's quickly become the norm and almost every candidate realizes it's the right way to run an election to be transparent and accountable to voters.
Mail-In Ballots: Working with my colleagues, we are passing a permanent law to ensure mail-in voting is here to stay after seeing its potential and security during the pandemic. Mail-in ballots are a perfect way to be sure residents, including seniors and anyone else who has a harder time getting around, can still be part of our elections. Plus, people love the ease of neighborhood-based drop boxes!
Making It Easier for Incarcerated Neighbors and Returning Citizens to Vote: I've also lead efforts to put polling stations inside DC Jail and support the Board of Elections in engaging with our incarcerated residents serving across the country in federal prison to help them vote. Restoring the right to vote has been shown to be a big and easy way to help reconnect our neighbors in their rehabilitation.
Thanks for reading and thanks for all of your support during this election. We're almost to the finish line. Thanks for your vote and I hope to see you on Tuesday night at Tunnicliff's!
