Grenfell Tower: Five years on
Yesterday (Tuesday 14 June) marked the fifth anniversary of the fire at Grenfell Tower in which 72 people lost their lives.

London Councils’ Executive Member for
Regeneration, Housing & Planning, Cllr Darren Rodwell, ( [link removed] ) said: “The fifth anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire is a time of sad reflection as we remember the lives lost and families torn apart that night.

“Five years on, no one should still be living in a building with dangerous cladding. Yet there are still too many buildings across the capital requiring fire safety works because of cladding or other issues, and too many Londoners stuck in limbo while arguments rage over how these works should be paid for.

“Boroughs continue to push for improvements to the national fire safety regime. Although progress has been made, there can be no rest until we know every Londoner is safe – and feels safe – in their home.”

Responding to the government’s ( [link removed] )Social Housing Regulation Bill ( [link removed] ) ( [link removed] ) introduced in Parliament last week, London Councils said that boroughs supported the emphasis on high-quality homes and new measures for empowering tenants.

Circular Economy Week

This week (13 - 17 June) is Circular Economy Week.

( [link removed] )#CEweek2022 ( [link removed] ) ( [link removed] ) is a week of inspiration and celebration to showcase and accelerate the stuff revolution.

It is hosted by ReLondon, London’s circular economy partner. ReLondon is a partnership of the Mayor of London, London Councils and the London boroughs to improve waste and resource management and transform the city into a leading low carbon circular economy.

Climate Change Showcase

London Councils’ Climate Change Showcase is an online-only event open to the public, borough officers and councillors, designed to showcase the innovation and collaboration taking place as a result of London Councils' Climate Programmes.

The event on Friday 1 July 10.30am to 12 noon is taking place during London Action Climate Week (25 June to 3 July). ( [link removed] )You can register for the event on London Councils’ website here ( [link removed] ) ( [link removed] ).

Our ( [link removed] )seven programmes are focused on all aspects of reducing carbon emissions and adapting to our future climate ( [link removed] ) ( [link removed] ). Each is led by one or two boroughs in London who are responsible for overseeing the implementation of a pan-London action plan.

The programmes stem from a 2019 ( [link removed] )Joint Statement on Climate Change ( [link removed] ) ( [link removed] ) agreed by London Councils’ Transport and Environment Committee (TEC) and the London Environment Directors’ Network (LEDNet), which committed London boroughs to delivering major programmes that address key climate change issues. #BeTheSolution.
