Latest vote counts show EUNISSES HERNANDEZ IN THE LEAD !!!
|
The latest drop of vote counts from the county show that DSA-LA endorsed candidate Eunisses Hernandez has taken the lead over incumbent Gil Cedillo in City Council District 1, with 11,354 votes (50.65%) to Cedillo's 11,062 (49.35%). If these results hold, there will be no runoff — Eunisses will be the next city council member for CD1.
DSA-LA endorsed candidate Hugo Soto-Martínez has widened his lead over incumbent Mitch O'Farrell in Council District 13, with 13,437 votes (38.35%) to O'Farrell's 11,871 (33.88%).
Fatima Iqbal-Zubair, also endorsed by DSA-LA and running for State Assembly District 65, will be headed to the November runoff against incumbent Mike Gipson. Late ballots continue to trend in Fatima's favor, and Gipson's lead is shrinking.
DSA-LA is SO EXCITED about these results -- when we fight together, we can win!!
The next drop of vote counts will be this Friday.

NIGHT SCHOOL – Black Leftist Thought Part 5: Black Power, Panther Power
|
Tuesday, June 14 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
|
The murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police in May 2020 sparked national outrage that coalesced into a movement across the United States demanding real, structural change in local law enforcement and the U.S. justice system. As this movement consolidated around the unifying demand of “Defund the Police,” a widespread interest in the rich history of Black radical thought reemerged. Leftist discourse reignited a critical study of ideas like the relationship between race and class, third world nationalism, critical race theory, and identity politics. What are the origins of these ideas, and how far back in our socialist history do they reach?
Join the DSA-LA Political Education Committee for our fifth class of the 7-Part Night School: A Study Series on Black Leftist Thought: Black Power, Panther Power. Readings and Media (highly recommended, not required):

DSA-LA SFV Marxism Reading Group – Pedagogy of the Oppressed – Part 2
|
Tuesday, June 14 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm
|
Please join us for our discussion of the second chapter of Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire on Tuesday, June 14th.
A favorite of socialists all over the world (and in DSA-LA) has been widely praised. A summary: “Pedagogy of the Oppressed develops a theory of education fitted to the needs of the disenfranchised and marginalized members of capitalist societies. Combining educational and political philosophy, the book offers an analysis of oppression and a theory of liberation. Freire believes that traditional education serves to support the dominance of the powerful within society and thereby maintain the powerful’s social, political, and economic status quo. To overcome the oppression endemic to an exploitative society, education must be remade to inspire and enable the oppressed in their struggle for liberation.”
A collaborative doc with the text we’ll be discussing, the audiobook version, and Zoom connection information will be provided. Please RSVP for access.
The discussion group is open to all, including DSA members outside of the San Fernando Valley and non-DSA members.
This reading group meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month.
