Hello Democrats,
This Thursday, I’ll be participating in an early celebration of Juneteenth along with Assemblymember Reggie Jones-Sawyer and candidate for State Senate, Lola Smallwood-Cuevas. The event is virtual and hosted by KBLA radio host and scholar Dr. Nii-Quartelai Quartey. I’d be honored if you would join us for the conversation this Thursday, June 16th, from 6-7 PM.

We’ll be taking a look at how deep and powerful the institution of slavery was and still is. As the granddaughter of sharecroppers and the descendant of people who experienced enslavement, I know firsthand the inherited legacy of slavery.
This experience motivated me when I was still in the California Assembly to author legislation that created California’s Reparations Task Force. This task force is the first of its kind for our nation and this June it released a comprehensive report detailing California’s role in perpetuating discrimination against African Americans.
We know that the legacy of injustices from slavery did not end when those who were enslaved won their freedom. Black Californians continue to experience harms that have compounded over generations, leading to inequalities within our community that we still endure today.
As we take these steps towards equity, I hope you’ll join me.
