John –

We must address rising crime and create the kind of public safety system that will serve everyone in our community. In the coming weeks, I plan to speak extensively about this.

I started laying out my plans in the legislature. I believe that high-quality, community-oriented policing must be at the center of our public safety system.

My focus in the last session was on a bill to aid recruiting high-quality police officer candidates from under-represented backgrounds. With strong support from the Minnesota Chapter of National Black Police Association, police chiefs and sheriffs, and legislators from many backgrounds, I was hopeful.

However, this approach was blocked by Republican legislators more interested in fighting over "defunding" the police than they were in pursuing a better approach to public safety.

I am not going to quit. We need a public safety vision that includes well-funded, highly trained, and carefully selected police officers who serve all the residents of Hennepin County. We need better policing, not more arguments about "defunding" the police.

As we look at the race for County Attorney, the activists and elected officials who want to tear down our public safety system are uniting behind other candidates. That will never be me. I will not ignore the safety concerns experienced by so many in our community, and I will work to make our system serve everyone.

I won't back away from the public safety plan we need, and I hope you will join me in moving us in the direction the vast majority of us want to pursue.

Please support my efforts to build a safer, more just Hennepin County by chipping in today.

To succeed, this must be a group effort. We're only safer together.

Thank you,

Ryan
