We must make it clear that all Philadelphians are welcome and we will always stand with the LGBTQ+ community.

Happy Pride, John!

Our city has long been home to a large, diverse queer community. Philadelphia was one of the first cities in the nation to host a Gay Pride march back in June of 1972. And this month, friends and neighbors come together to uplift one another and recognize how far the LGBTQ+ community has come since the Stonewall riots of 1969.

It's important to recognize that 2022 has brought another wave of hateful discrimination against LGBTQ+ Americans. That's why along with celebrating, it's important to recommit ourselves to the fight for equality for all.

We've seen the Pennsylvania legislature targeting transgender students — introducing bills to ostracize our kids from sports based on their gender identities. These actions have a real and negative impact on our children and the LGBTQ+ community as a whole. It takes a mental and emotional toll on those just trying to live as their true selves.

We must be willing to speak up and fight loudly and proudly against these hateful tactics. Our nation truly isn't free until we're ALL free, and it's why I am standing in solidarity with LGBTQ+ Americans and proudly voted for the Equality Act. We must make it clear that all Philadelphians are welcome, and we will always stand with the LGBTQ+ community.

I hope you will join me in adding your name next to mine to show solidarity, uplift the voices of our LGBTQ+ community, and commit to standing firmly with our neighbors in the spirit of love and Pride.

Happy Pride Month!

In solidarity,

Dwight Evans
