John,

Across the country, Republican lawmakers and their allies are working overtime to punish companies proactively tackling climate change.

In red states, GOP governors, legislators, and statewide officials are using fiscal and legislative threats to rein in businesses working to reduce greenhouse gasses that are dangerously heating the planet.

Red state officials are politicizing their government pension and investment funds by threatening to pull money from asset managers and companies that publicly highlight their commitment to climate action. In Texas, for example, a new law prohibits the state’s retirement and investment funds from doing business with companies that the state comptroller identifies as boycotting fossil fuels.

The West Virginia state treasurer coordinated a letter last November from 16 state treasurers and comptrollers to banks across the country. The letter threatened “collective action in response to the ongoing and growing economic boycott of traditional energy production industries by U.S financial institutions.”

One of the bright spots in the climate movement in recent years has been the growing awareness of the private sector that they also have a role to play in fighting climate change. But rather than work with these companies on climate action that would benefit us all, right-wing Republicans are attacking the good intentions of climate-conscious companies and banks in order to appeal to their base and score political points.

John, this latest coordinated campaign by state Republicans to block not only government climate action but now also private sector climate action is profoundly disappointing and disturbing.

That’s why we must elect more pro-environment members of Congress who will work instead on policies and legislation to incentivize corporations to make climate-conscious decisions.
