Hello,
Around Vermont, and across the country, students of all kinds celebrated their commencement this spring. A time of celebration, it’s always such a joy to watch folks celebrate their hard work.
Education, especially higher education, is often the gateway to the American middle class. In many industries, bachelor’s or even master’s degrees are required for entry-level jobs. But as the price of college soars, Vermonters and people across the country are getting crushed by debt. For many, this means higher education feels out of reach.
Student debt is a problem—but it’s particularly bad in Vermont. Student debt is higher here—$37,000 a person—than the national average. That means it’s on us to act.
As we continue to work to recover from the pandemic, it’s urgent we act. Short-term band-aids are not good enough, it’s clear people need long-term relief. One way to help is by canceling some student debt for certain borrowers, which would provide immediate relief to millions, work to close the racial wealth gap, and much more.
Peter’s been listening to Vermont students for years, and he’s heard about how they’re pushed into heavy debt to finish school. Bottom line: we shouldn't saddle students with a lifetime of debt for simply pursuing a higher education.
That’s why Peter continues to work to make higher education affordable and reduce the crushing burden of student loan debt. He’s fighting to increase access to community college, make debt-free public college a reality for all, and reduce the burden of student loans. He’s fighting to solve the student debt crisis today and make sure we don’t have another one on our hands tomorrow.
And we need to fight by his side.
Thanks for taking action,
Team Welch
