For the first time in a *decade*, the Supreme Court is hearing a case on gun safety. But this case was brought on by the NRA, who are trying to advance a radical interpretation of the Second Amendment -- an interpretation that would argue that gun rights are more important than every other right.
Including our right not to be shot.
We cannot and will not stand by while the NRA works to radicalize the Supreme Court AND the Constitution. That’s why this past summer we submitted an amicus brief to the Court about this case, sharing the personal stories of nine young people whose lives have forever been impacted by gun violence. Then when we introduced our Peace Plan this fall, we emphasized the importance of the Court upholding our right not to be shot and not to take away our right to affect change through our advocacy and participation in political processes.
And now thanks to the work of our local and regional organizers, we’ve been rallying outside the Supreme Court, alongside hundreds of other students and activists, since 7:00 this morning.
We will not be silent.
We will not give in.
We have a right to live.
How can you help?Public opinion has always held importance in Supreme Court cases, including in the disastrous Heller decision. The Justices need to know that young people are watching. Talk about this with your friends, your family, and on social media. Follow the rally and share your own thoughts on Twitter with #GunLawsSaveLives. Make it loud and clear that you believe we have the right to live in peace, free of fear, and not be shot. We are Generation Lockdown -- having grown up with gun violence -- and we will live or die by the consequences of what the Court decides.
We have a lot of work ahead of us in the courts, even beyond this case. But we can do it. We have to.
In solidarity,
