Sain Bainaa/Greetings,
June 1 was our annual giving day and, thanks to you, we met our $10,000 challenge match put up by our generous donor, Ruth Perry! Today, I write to you to wish all of you a very happy 50th anniversary as we continue to celebrate the founding of Cultural Survival in 1972. This milestone is one shared by many– to the organization’s founders and their families, partners, staff, volunteers, and our community far and wide– we reached this special moment together.
My heart is filled with joy, as I am confident that our organization is living up to its mission and providing support and resources on the ground to our partner communities and the global Indigenous Peoples movement. Cultural Survival has worked in partnership to develop a new strategic framework ([link removed]) that will guide our work in the years ahead. We’ve all seen first-hand the transformational power of the work we do: from empowering young Indigenous women rights defenders to use their voices to make change to providing an urgent response and resources during the COVID-19 pandemic. Just in 2021, we supported 57 community media projects in 23 countries through Indigenous Community Media Fund and 62 advocacy and development projects in 21 countries through our Keepers of the Earth Fund. And after over a decade of joint advocacy, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights Court announced its decision in the case Indigenous Maya Kaqchikel Peoples
of Sumpango vs. Guatemala ([link removed]) , declaring the Republic of Guatemala “internationally responsible for the violation of the rights to freedom of expression, equality before the law and participation in cultural life” of Indigenous Peoples. A huge win for Indigenous media rights!
Our anniversary is also an opportunity to pay our respects and gratitude to all of those who came before us, because their work brought us to this moment. There is no doubt in my mind that for as long as we stay true to our values and principles ([link removed]) , for as long as we strive to honor the sacrifices and achievements of our ancestors, the possibilities are limitless. In a world where Indigenous communities and territories are constantly under attack, our worldviews and leadership are essential in addressing the crises humanity faces today as well as ensuring a sustainable and healthy world for the next seven generations.
None of what we have accomplished would have ever been possible without the collaborative work of our Board, Staff, partner communities, and of course the backing of our loyal supporters.
Happy 50th anniversary!
Bayarlaa/With gratitude,
Galina Angarova (Buryat)
Executive Director

Cultural Survival advocates for Indigenous Peoples' rights and supports Indigenous communities’ self-determination, cultures and political resilience since 1972. We envision a future that respects and honors Indigenous Peoples' inherent rights and dynamic cultures, deeply and richly interwoven in lands, languages, spiritual traditions, and artistic expression, rooted in self-determination and self-governance.
