Throughout Poynter’s 12th annual Teachapalooza ([link removed]) , students took charge and shared key lessons with teachers.
Four current college students and recent grads talked over video about a piece of journalism they created — and how their professors and advisers contributed to their success.
“My journalism professors are the only thing that got me through COVID,” said Sam Mallon, a 2022 Western Kentucky University photojournalism grad. “They’re friends. They’re coaches. They’re family to me at this point.”
Nataly Joseph, a journalism major at USC Annenberg School for Communication and executive editor for USC Annenberg Media ([link removed]) , moderated the keynote address with New York Times reporters Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey about investigative journalism (Read this round-up of their tips! Later, University of Alabama-Birmingham journalism major and open source intelligence expert Justin Peden ([link removed]) taught alongside MediaWise director Alex Mahadevan ([link removed]) about the latest online verification tools and techniques.
It was all a heartening example of the excellent work being done by student journalists and a tribute to the educators dedicated to shaping the future of our industry.
