Celebrate Old Glory with these
Flag Day essentials!

A Birthday & An Anniversary!

Today is the anniversary of two significant days in American history: the birthday of the US Army, and Flag Day!

The Army was created by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1775. George Washington was elected Commander-in-Chief the next day and issued orders for the military, including one declaring:

The blessings and protection of Heaven are at all times necessary...The General hopes and trusts that every officer and man will endeavor [to] live and act as becomes a Christian Soldier defending the dearest rights and liberties of his country.

The Army has continuously been recognized throughout American history. Such as by Frederick Douglass who reminded the nation:

We must never forget that the loyal soldiers who rest beneath this sod flung themselves between the nation and the nation destroyers. [I]f the Star-Spangled Banner floats only over free American citizens in every quarter of the land...we are indebted to the unselfish devotion of the noble army who rest in these honored graves all around us.

General George Marshall also spoke about the United States' mission during WWII:

We are determined that before the sun sets on this terrible struggle, our flag will be recognized throughout the world as a symbol of freedom on the one hand and of overwhelming force on the other.

Flag Day commemorates June 14, 1777 when the Continental Congress passed a resolution establishing the look of the first national flag. The first Flag Day celebration occurred in 1885 as a school celebration in Wisconsin. The idea of honoring our flag spread across the country and President Woodrow Wilson eventually issued a 1916 presidential proclamation recognizing Flag Day. Since then, generations have continued to celebrate the American flag.

Today, let's celebrate the American Army and all our military who so ably defend our flag, our God-given freedoms, and God-blessed nation!
