Monday Nature Mystery

We are pleased to announce the winner of our last Monday Nature Mystery, Seth FinkelPlease email us your snail mail address and preference for a hat or tote bag to: [email protected]

Congratulations to Seth for correctly identifying the Swarthy Skipper, Nastra Iherminier. According to Butterflies and Moths, this species is dependent entirely on its host plant, Little Bluestem, a type of North American prairie grass that was named Perennial Plant Association’s Plant of the Year for 2022. This little brown butterfly is a skipper, in the family Hesperiidae, named due to their quick, darting flight habits. And at about an inch of wingspan, these little guys can be hard to spot. Don’t miss our upcoming butterfly identification workshop to learn more!
