Military Academy Nominations

Dear John,

This year, I proudly nominated 19 residents of Northeastern Pennsylvania as candidates to the prestigious United States Service Academies. The remarkable nominees from Lackawanna, Luzerne, Wayne, Pike and Monroe counties have proven their willingness to lead and inspire those around them. 

Not only do they excel in academics, but they have demonstrated high moral character, honor and duty to their schools, local communities and their country. To learn more about the application process, click below. 

Touring the National Institute of Standards and Technology Headquarters 

Today, I joined officials from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to tour their Headquarters in Maryland. NIST is the world’s leading organization for technology, measurement and standards. We learned more about their need for renovations and repairs, and we are working to make sure they have state-of-the-art facilities to continue the great work they’re doing. 

Last weekend, I attended the first annual Rescue Pets Serving Vets Dog Walk and recognize the hard work of Founder and CEO Casey Shonis, Dr. John Shonis and the organization’s volunteers. Despite Casey’s ALS diagnosis, she has never faltered in her dedication to the organization and continues to strive for excellence. 

Over the past four years, they have helped place more than 1,000 dogs with loving families, making veterans a priority. I know that Rescue Pets Serving Vets will continue to work tirelessly to rescue dogs from high kill shelters across the country and make a difference in our community.

Connecting Communities Digital Initiative Announces Grant Opportunities 

Educational and cultural institutions that seek to amplify the stories of Black, Indigenous, Hispanic or Latino, Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, and other communities of color by using the digital collections at the Library of Congress are invited to apply for the second round of grant opportunities through the Of the People: Widening the Path Connecting Communities Digital Initiative. 

The funding opportunities include three grants for higher education institutions and three grants for libraries, archives or museums, up to $50,000 each. Interested applicants are invited to attend informational webinars on the grant opportunities. Applications will be accepted through Sept. 30.
