At its most basic core, a secretary of education should always have the best interests of America’s students at heart.
Instead, this country has a secretary (thanks to Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell) who puts her big corporation and special-interest buddies before any of our nation’s students. And now, her latest stunt is a clear sign of just that. Recently, Betsy DeVos was held in contempt by a federal judge, and her Department of Education was fined $100,000 for her failure to stop collecting loans from former students defrauded by for-profit colleges that have been shut down. Betsy DeVos’ blatant disregard for the students who were cheated or defrauded by defunct for-profit colleges is truly reprehensible.
Betsy DeVos is a reckless choice for our nation’s students, which is exactly why I voted against her nomination. That’s why I need you to join me in telling Donald Trump that our students deserve a secretary who actually looks out for their best interests!
Betsy DeVos is a danger to our students. Let us not forget just how extremist and threatening the Trump/DeVos agenda has been for students. Some of their greatest hits have included: loosening civil rights protections for students, revoking guidance protecting transgender students, creating a "too big to fail" situation by giving one company a monopoly over student loan borrowing, allowing onerous collection fees on defaulted borrowers, removing protections against predatory practices from for-profit colleges and proposing cuts that would raid the federal student loan program – making it extremely difficult for students to afford their education.
Since day one, it's been clear that Betsy DeVos is extremely inept and wholly unqualified for this position. And since day one, her No. 1 priority has been one thing and one thing only: deepening the pockets of her wealthy special-interest friends, all at the expense and well-being of our nation's students. That is why we need to continue to speak out against the harm she's inflicting on our students!
