One of the patients I treated in Kharkiv, Ukraine was an 83-year-old woman named Nina. She was trapped in the Kharkiv metro station with nowhere to go. She and many other local people sat and listened as Russian shelling gradually destroyed their city.
Nina was at home with her husband when she heard an impact close by. She hardly had time to react when an explosion leveled her building. She and her husband were pulled from the rubble by neighbors and thankfully did not sustain any serious injuries. They sought shelter in the only safe place left in the city—the underground subway system.
Though it provided protection from the bombs that rained down from above, the people sheltering there were cut off from essential services, including health care. For Nina, who has diabetes, asthma, and high blood pressure, the circumstances were critical. And like so many others we saw, she also suffered from severe anxiety and broke down in tears as she told me her story.
Nina was one of the patients my team treated in an MSF mobile clinic, one of several that were sent to metro stations across the city, where people were trapped by ongoing attacks. We provided medical care for new and existing health conditions, medications to treat chronic illnesses, and psychological support for people experiencing panic, anxiety, and trauma.
This is just one example of how MSF works to provide urgent aid anywhere people are displaced by extreme dangers like war, natural disasters, and persecution in more than 70 countries. Generous supporters like you enable our teams to save lives—and inspire hope.
