John – In the wake of multiple mass shootings, including Buffalo and Uvalde, the House of Representatives finally took some action and passed a series of new bills to address gun safety this week.

But not every Democrat was on board.

While five Republicans joined the Democrats to pass the bills, four Democrats voted against several key provisions. One of them should be a familiar name to you: Henry Cuellar.

Screenshot from a Texas Signal article published June 10, 2022. The headline reads: “Cuellar sides with GOP, votes against gun reform”. The screenshot includes two sections of the article. The first section reads: “On Wednesday, conservative Democrat Rep. Henry Cuellar, who represents Texas’ 28th congressional district, voted against raising the minimum age to access semi-automatic rifles from 18 to 21 in the House of Representatives’ latest legislation on gun safety. In light of the Uvalde massacre, which led to the death of 19 children and two teachers just 80 miles away from Cuellar’s district, the Democratic politicians created a gun reform package with seven key provisions.” The second section quoted reads: “The bill also restricts the accessibility of large capacity magazines and ammunition, a specific provision in the bill Cuellar also voted no on.”

Cuellar voted against raising the minimum age to purchase AR-15 weapons, the style of gun used in both the Buffalo and Uvalde massacres, AND against banning high capacity magazines.

Let’s be clear: the Democratic bill was already a weak response to the plague of American gun violence.

  • Nearly 75% of Americans support raising the age to purchase ANY gun (not just assault weapons like the AR-15).

  • 83% of gun owners support universal background checks – something the bills passed in the House did not address.

  • 51% of Americans support a total ban on assault weapons like the AR-15.

But Henry Cuellar couldn’t even get on the same page with his own party’s bill – which is not that shocking given his A-rating from the NRA.

Reminder - Henry Cuellar’s district is only 80 miles from Uvalde.

The House bill did pass, however. And now it goes to the Senate where it is not expected to pass thanks to the filibuster and conservative Democrats like Joe Manchin.

This year we have a chance to elect our first BNC Senator by helping Charles Booker defeat Rand Paul in November.

We also have five BNC electeds up for reelection, and more BNC primaries ahead.

Too many races this year have been decided by razor thin margins, John.

BNC’s Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick won her primary by just FIVE votes. Jessica Cisneros is headed into a recount only 281 votes behind Cuellar.

Your sustaining support could be the deciding factor in whether or not we send another progressive to Congress. If you’re able to commit to a small monthly contribution in any amount, click here: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/bncforward2022
