John,
Today is World Day Against Child Labor. As part of the work we do around the world to end child labor, we are sharing a story about the spirit and resilience of one boy in the face of adversity – and how the right support at the right moment can help make all the difference in a child’s life.
When we first met 13-year-old Siraj,* his future was uncertain. His dreams of becoming a doctor were initially dashed by the war in Syria. After his father was killed in a tragic accident, Siraj and his family fled their home to seek safety in Lebanon.
Although life in Lebanon was safer, it wasn’t easy. Siraj began working to support his family – and it was hard work that no child should ever have to do. Up at 4 a.m., he would spend seven hours harvesting tomatoes in the baking heat. He would then go to school in the afternoon, but his energy was spent. All he wanted to do was crash into bed at night as he watched his dreams of becoming a doctor begin to fade away.
Then, a Save the Children caseworker, Josette, talked with Siraj at one of our child-friendly spaces. She helped Siraj’s mom start a business to support their family, which would allow him to concentrate on his studies. The effect was almost immediate: Siraj rose to the top of his class. Eventually, Josette led them through a complex resettlement process, and they moved to Italy.
Siraj misses his old friends in Lebanon, but he’s already embracing his new life. He is learning the language, making new friends and planning a successful future in his new home country with his limitless determination.
John, this is just one story out of millions that your support has made possible. Thank you for helping us create better and brighter futures for the children who need it most.
