John,
This Friday, young people are going on strike in 260 cities across the country:
-
In Houston, TX, high schoolers are leading a die-in at their City Hall targeting candidates for city council and for Congress and demanding they support the Houston Climate Action Plan for their city and a GND for the country.
-
In New Orleans, LA, the Gulf South for a Green New Deal coalition is rallying to call on New Orleans’ mayor and city council to stop a New Orleans East gas plant and relocate residents of the Gordon Plaza housing development built on a toxic landfill site.
-
In Los Angeles, CA, Sunrisers dropped five banners this morning over highway 110 that runs right through downtown, calling people to join them in striking for a Green New Deal on Friday.
These are just a few of the hundreds of ambitious strike-day actions planned across the US. Check out the map to see what’s happening on strike day in your area.
Last week, the UN released another terrifying climate report. Scientists say that we need to cut down global emissions by at least 55% in the next 10 years to avoid the most catastrophic effects of climate change. But right now, we’re not even close to being on track.
A co-author of the report said, “There is no way we are going to make it if we don’t step up action as of next year with ambitious plans.”1
Luckily, we have a plan to get to net-zero emissions by 2030, and it’s in the Green New Deal. All we need now is for politicians to step up and put it into action.
So this Friday young people across the country are striking to make clear that any politician who’s serious about protecting our lives and futures needs to get serious about championing the Green New Deal.
Join your local strike to make sure politicians in your town and across the country hear our call to champion the Green New Deal now--our futures depend on it.
See you on Friday.
