Pride is a time to celebrate our LGBTQ+ community, and a time to remember those who fought for equality.
Those like Marsha P. Johnson, who was an instrumental figure in the Stonewall Riots, which kickstarted the LGBTQ+ equality movement. Those like Sylvia Rivera, who tirelessly fought for the inclusion of transgender and gender non-conforming people in the LGBTQ+ equality movement. And those like Harvey Milk, the first openly gay politician in California, who advocated for legal protections for gay and trans people.
I will always fight to make CA-27 – and the rest of the country – a more equal and just place.
Unfortunately, the fight for LGBTQ+ equality is far from over.
Policies, like Florida's "Don't Say Gay" bill, continue to be passed in state legislatures across the country. Last year, extreme Republicans in the House – including Mike Garcia – voted "no" on passing the Equality Act, legislation that would have barred discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity in areas like employment, housing, and education.
There is still more work to be done. But unlike Garcia, I promise I will always fight for your right to love who you love and be your true, authentic self.
Christy Smith is running an entirely grassroots campaign that doesn't rely on corporate PAC or special interest money. Your generous support is key to flipping CA-27 from red to blue. As one of only 14 "toss-up" races in the country, the path to holding our Democratic majority in Congress goes straight through CA-27. Will you pitch in and help flip this seat red to blue once and for all?
