Guest: Sara Holzknecht, NW Organizer for Oceana

As part of Oceana’s field team, Sara builds on-the-ground support for Oceana’s U.S. campaigns. She leads coalitions of volunteers and allies to pass policies to reduce single-use plastic at the local, state and national level, and oppose the expansion of offshore drilling in Washington.

Sara has been an advocate for climate action since 2017 when she co-founded a local chapter of 350.org. Her work with 350 Eastside focused on consumer education and driving systemic change to achieve a clean energy future. She’s been involved with local efforts to establish a new Public Utility District in Seattle’s Eastside, to replace the for-profit, fossil fuel-driven business model of the existing utility.

Oceana is the largest international advocacy organization dedicated solely to ocean conservation. Oceana is rebuilding abundant and biodiverse oceans by winning science-based policies in countries that control one-third of the world’s wild fish catch. With more than 225 victories that stop overfishing, habitat destruction, pollution, and the killing of threatened species like turtles and sharks, Oceana’s campaigns are delivering results. A restored ocean means that 1 billion people can enjoy a healthy seafood meal, every day, forever. Together, we can save the oceans and help feed the world. Visit www.USA.Oceana.org to learn more.

Can we count you in for funding support?

Would you want to be a part of funding an exciting East King County PUD educational project that has the potential to dramatically advance the climate narrative in Washington State?

As you may already know, 350 Eastside (a 501c3 non-profit) has retained an engineering firm to investigate accelerated decarbonization pathways consistent with the urgency of the climate crisis in the proposed East King County PUD service area. The investigation will describe a scenario for 100% decarbonization of all direct uses of fossil fuels by 2050, essentially by substituting renewably generated electricity (likely wind and solar with battery storage sites). This information will advance a positive narrative consistent with the magnitude of the climate crisis, in a specific, achievable context. With your generous help, it can become a model for wider impact.

The study will cost on the order of $60,000, so please consider a significant tax-deductible donation through the 350 Eastside website, although any amount is graciously accepted. Click “Donate” for PayPal for the credit card option.  It would be greatly appreciated if you would also pass along this appeal to your membership, friends, and family for the opportunity to fund this study and associated outreach.

If you or your membership would like further information before donating, please text Sue at 206-617-6855, and she will get back to you.

Junteenth events in Bellevue

City declares holiday, celebrates with traveling museum, dance performances and virtual workshop

The City of Bellevue joins with a number of community partners this month to celebrate Juneteenth and present important activities for residents, workers and community members far and wide.

The events will include an in-person opportunity to experience the National Award-winning American History Traveling Museum: The Unspoken Truths, hosted by curator and storyteller Delbert Richardson at City Hall. The museum will be available for the public to experience on Friday, June 10, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., and Monday, June 13, noon-6 p.m. In addition, Richardson is offering storytelling sessions noon-1 p.m., June 10, and 1-4:30 p.m., Monday, June 13.

The exhibit at City Hall will also include a dance performance by local, Black-owned performance group VCBynum Arts and Education, featuring guest dancer DianaStarr Raynell. Her performance is at 4:30 p.m. on June 13.

City partner for equity and inclusion, EastHUB, will sponsor a virtual workshop as part of its Structural Racism in the Arts series and in celebration of Juneteenth. The June 15 session, "A Lens on Racist Policies in the Arts Community," will be hosted over Zoom. Registration is required.

Juneteenth observes the freedom of all enslaved African Americans in the United States after word of the Emancipation Proclamation reached the last enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, more than two years after President Lincoln signed the proclamation. Today, the holiday marks this historic moment, recognizes the importance of freedom and equity, honors those who were enslaved and celebrates the many contributions of Black Americans.

The City of Bellevue, along with the Washington state and federal governments, have declared Juneteenth as an official holiday. The city proclaimed Juneteenth as a day of recognition in Bellevue and will raise the Juneteenth flag at city facilities June 17-24. City facilities will be closed Monday, June 20, in observance of the holiday.

For more information on Juneteenth events in Bellevue, view the flyer or contact [email protected].

We need YOU! Sign up to be in the parade and/or at Art Builds. Join us in the Fremont Summer Solstice Parade, where we'll have a fun way for the audience to show support for the Green New Deal in Seattle by stamping hand prints (their own, or with a stamp) onto the bottom of murals depicting the just solutions we all want and need.

Washington Poor People’s Campaign

The Seattle Regional PPC in partnership with The Well and the WA PPC is honored to host Dr. Cornel West for a virtual talk on King's Philosophy of Nonviolence Monday, June 13th 6 to 7:30 PM.  Dr. West will remind us that nonviolence is not a temporary behavior we adopt while taking action- it is a way of life for people who believe, "that justice is what love looks like in public".

Dr. West will connect King's philosophy with our campaign to shift the narrative, build power among people living in poverty and low wealth, and to secure policies that reconstruct society from the bottom up. He will ground us and prepare us for the Mass Assembly and March on Washington DC June 18th!

Green Your Home’s Carbon Footprint

Date:  June 14th, 6:30 pm

Sponsored by Faith Action Climate Team (FACT).  Court Olson, a civil engineer with decades of experience in green buildings will be speaking on June 14th at 6:30.

So many of us are trying to figure out the changes we can make to our homes to make them energy efficient.  But it is confusing sometime between new technologies (what’s a heat pump) and how to prioritize (what come first solar panels or insulation?)  Even how do I modify from gas to electric?  What kind of professional do I need to help me?   This practical presentation will help you sort out what you need to do for your home in order to do your part to become part of the difference for our beloved planet!  Register in advance for this meeting: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZEqdO2spzMtEtA4KVBzFJEyJM2s0QJK17cT
