Dear friends --
The dust is still settling from this Tuesday’s primary, but we wanted to share some exciting developments in key races throughout the state.
The bottom line: California voters are lining up to support candidates who are serious about ending our state’s housing shortage and affordability crisis.
Here’s an overview of how our open-seat endorsed candidates fared on Tuesday:
Advanced to the general election:
- David Jones (SD 8)
- Catherine Blakespear (SD 38)
- Joe Patterson (AD 5)
- Shawn Kumagai (AD 20)
- Pilar Schiavo (AD 40)
- Christy Holstege (AD 47)
- Rick Chavez Zbur (AD 51)
- Tina McKinnor (AD 61)
Too close to call:
- Eric Guerra (AD 10)
- Caroline Menjivar (SD 20)
Not advancing:
- Giselle Hale (AD 21)
- Jon Wizard (AD 30)
While we’re disheartened by the results in some of these races, these results should be encouraging to everyone who wants to see a YIMBY majority in Sacramento.
Our endorsed incumbents also had a great primary. We’re especially excited to see that Asm. Alex Lee placed first in his district, despite millions spent by special interests to unseat him, proving once again that California voters value housing action more than fancy campaign ads.
Now is the time to double down on electing pro-housing candidates. This fall’s election will shape the State Legislature for years to come. Please chip in $25 to fund the California YIMBY Victory Fund, our electoral arm, to help us elect pro-housing lawmakers up and down California.

We’ll keep you posted on the status of those outstanding races — as well as new endorsements we’ll be rolling out later this summer.
Gratefully,
Team California YIMBY
