We watched Thursday night’s January 6 th Commission hearings with the same sense of renewed horror that you did.
The images we saw were chilling – Capitol police officers holding on to one another for dear life as a violent crowd mobbed and assaulted them – and the testimony even more so. We will never forget Officer Caroline Edwards’s stoic bravery as she fought through her emotions to share her recollection of events.

Officer Edwards was knocked unconscious and suffered a traumatic brain injury when Trump supporters smashed her head into the pavement with a bike rack, but she didn’t stay down – as soon as she came to, she got back up and ran to assist her fellow officers as they tried to subdue the bloody insurrection.
She described what she experienced as “a war scene … hours and hours of hand-to-hand combat, hours of dealing with things that were way beyond any law enforcement officer has ever trained for.”
"I could not believe my eyes,” she told the Committee. “There were officers on the ground. They were bleeding. They were throwing up. I saw friends with blood all over their faces. I was slipping in people's blood. I was catching people as they fell. It was carnage. It was chaos."
She remembered standing back-to-back with Officer Brian Sicknick as Trump supporters assaulted them with their fists, objects, pepper spray, and other chemical agents.
Officer Edwards recalled seeing her colleague turn “ghostly pale,” which she said set off “alarm bells” because normally people react to pepper spray by turning bright red. She knew something was terribly wrong.
Sure enough, just a few hours later, Officer Sicknick collapsed. He was rushed to the hospital, where he died after suffering two strokes. The medical examiner said “all that transpired played a role in his condition” and subsequent death.
Yesterday morning, after attending the previous night’s hearing, Officer Sicknick’s partner and his two brothers all told CNN they hold Donald Trump responsible for their loved one’s death and hope he goes to prison.

“Donald Trump has never paid the price for anything he has done in his entire life,” Craig Sicknick said, through tears. “Any mistake he’s made, it’s been swept under the carpet, made to go away … let’s see if it happens again or if there is actually justice served.”
Officer Sicknick’s longtime partner, Sandra Garza, also lamented that Trump “seems to escape justice time and time again,” but said she hoped “maybe [the hearings] would change that. That would be a wonderful thing.”
Ken Sicknick said prison time for Trump would be “the least that could happen” for justice to be served. “ That night, when [Trump] was laughing and cheering on the crowds, you know, he would still wake up in the morning and be able to see his family.”
Sadly, none of us can ensure justice will be served for this shattered family. We don’t have the power to put Donald Trump behind bars … that’s up to the Department of Justice.
But we do have the power to make sure this never happens again, and that starts with holding Trump-loyal Republican politicians accountable at the ballot box for their role in promoting The Big Lie and planning and encouraging a deadly insurrection.

The Republican Party is busy right now working to install Trump loyalists in key electoral oversight positions, Attorney General offices, and judicial roles in hopes that the next time they try to overthrow the will of the people, they’ll succeed.
That would be the end of democracy as we know it – if we let them pull this off, we’ll never have another free and fair election again.
We have got to give these midterms everything we’ve got to stop them in their tracks – or we risk our country becoming a dictatorship ruled by Trump, his understudy Ron DeSantis, or even someone worse in 2024.
