Dear
Reader,
We moderns will do almost anything to avoid thinking about death. Indeed, we trot out all manner of diversions in an effort to will such thoughts away.
They don’t work. Moreover, by failing to grapple with that toward which all human life moves, we find ourselves ill-equipped to face its reality when we can avoid it no longer.
Those who came before us were under no such illusion. Drawing upon the wisdom of the classical, Jewish, and Christian traditions, our second 2022 First Things Intellectual Retreat will reflect on “Death and Mourning.” I invite you to join us on August 19-20 at the Penn Club of New York for a weekend of study, reflection, and fellowship.
